E-Safety

What does E-Safety look like in our school?

At St. Mary’s, our staff are committed to keeping children safe online and do their upmost to teach children the skills they need to keep themselves and others safe when using technology. E-Safety is taught through a variety of ways – through computing lessons, in e-safety assemblies and as part of our Relationship and Life Skills (RLS) curriculum.

We teach children:

  • What online abuse looks like
  • What to do
  • Who to tell

Our children are taught to be SMART when using online technologies.

S – Be Safe
Keep your personal information safe and secure
M – Do Not Meet Up
Do not agree to meet anyone that you meet online – they might not be who they say they are!
A – Do Not Accept
Be careful about accepting emails or messages from people that you do not know.
R – Reliable?
Do not always trust the information that you find on the internet. It may not always be correct.
T – Tell Someone
If something on the internet upsets you, tell a trusted adult at home or at school about it.

Top tips for keeping your child safe online…

  • Keep the computer in a family area not in the child’s bedroom.
  • Use ‘child lock’ or filter settings on your Web browser to help prevent unsuitable site access by your child.
  • Regularly supervise the sites your child is visiting.
  • Encourage your child to use their Favourites list to access the sites you have approved to prevent accidental entry to unsuitable sites.
  • Teach your child to leave the screen on and to come and find you if they find something that makes them uncomfortable – that way you can monitor and report the unwanted information.
  • Keep all personal details private and be aware of stranger danger.
  • Above all, encourage your child to talk to you about the web sites and electronic devices they are using at home and school.
